Where the port is and what is nearby
Alsancak Port sits inside the city itself. The Kordon waterfront, Konak Square and the Kemeralti bazaar are within walking distance or a short drive, so getting into town is not a problem.
The real distances start once you leave the immediate area. Ephesus is 75 km, Sirince 82 km, and Pamukkale over 250 km. Pamukkale does not realistically fit a single port call — it is roughly three hours each way, and any delay on the return becomes a risk of missing the ship.
Build the plan backwards from departure
The only hard constraint on a port day is the ship's departure time. Travelling independently, the ship will not wait for you, so the plan runs backwards rather than forwards.
Set your latest return time at least an hour before departure, then work backwards adding the drive and the time each site needs. What you end up with is the time you must leave the port in the morning.
When doing that arithmetic, use the congestion the route is known to carry that day and hour, not the best-case drive time. In summer the Selcuk exit slows in the afternoon.
- If the ship leaves at 18:00, be back at the port by 17:00 at the latest
- Ephesus to port is 1 hour 5 minutes → leave Ephesus by 15:45
- Ephesus takes 2.5 hours → be inside the site by 13:15
- Lunch in Sirince takes 1.5 hours → leave Sirince by 13:00
- Result: leaving the port around 09:30 is enough
Ship excursion or independent trip
The one real advantage of a ship excursion is liability: if the tour runs late, the ship waits. The price of that is a full coach, a fixed programme and stops you did not choose.
Going independently, the itinerary is yours, the vehicle is yours alone and you decide how long to spend anywhere. In exchange, the timekeeping is entirely your responsibility.
The way to shrink that risk is to set the return time with an hour of slack as above, and to agree the plan with your driver at the start of the day. A driver who knows the route will know how it behaves at that hour and will suggest trimming the plan in time if needed.
Practical notes
The area where vehicles can wait outside the port is limited and gets busy when a ship berths. Agreeing the meeting point the day before saves time if there is no phone signal at the terminal exit.
